SQ3R: A Reading Technique
How to Hit the Books


SQ3R stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review. It is a proven technique to sharpen textbook reading skills. In college, you'll frequently be assigned multiple chapters for several different courses in books that can be quite complicated. SQ3R helps make reading purposeful and meaningful, so that you use your time most effectively. Here's how this strategy works.

**Survey**
Get an idea of what the chapter is about by reviewing the highlights:

*Read the title, headings, and subheadings.
*Take note of words that are italicized or bold.
*Look at charts, graphs, pictures, maps, and other visual material.
*Read captions.
*Read the very beginning and end of the chapter.

**Question**
As you survey the text, ask a question for each section. Ask what, why, how, when, who and where questions as they relate to the content. Here's how you can create questions:
*Turn the title, headings, or subheadings into questions.
*Rewrite the questions at the end of the chapter or after each subheading in your own words.
Write down your questions. Questions help you pay attention, understand the text better, and recall the information more easily later on.


**Read**
Read one section of a chapter at a time, actively looking for an answer to your question for that section. Pay attention to bold and italicized text that authors use to make important points. Be sure to review everything in the section, including tables, graphs, and illustrations, as these features can communicate an idea more powerfully than written text.


**Recite**
At the end of each section, look up from the text and in your own words recite an answer to your question for that section. Then write down your answer. Be sure to provide examples that support it.
Now repeat the Question, Read, and Recite steps for each section of the chapter or assigned reading. First ask a question for the next section. Then read to find the answer. Finally, recite the answer in your own words and jot it down. The written questions and answers will help you study in the future.


**Review**
After completing each chapter or reading assignment, review your notes. Identify the main points of the reading by looking for the most important idea in each section. Recite, or write, a brief summary of the chapter or assignment.
Review your study notes every week to help you remember the information. When it's time to study for your tests, you'll find you've created an invaluable guide.

LESSON PLAN

Title : Lost in Time
Aim : To practice and motivate the students to develop their reading skills
Level :The intermediate students
Time : 60 minutes.
Technical Requirement :
Hardware: 2-3 students per computer; an Internet connection
Software: A Web Browser
Preparation : The teacher prepares reading maze "Lost in time" website for the students.
Procedure:

1. Explain the students how to use the maze on the Internet.
2. Divide the class into small groups that each group consists of 2-3 students.
3. Ask the students to read the maze that it is about finding Marcus.Then, the teacher asks the students in each group to select one of the moments that they interested in and try to discuss and answer the questions in each moment together.
4. Then, each group makes understanding about the maze and present what's happen in each moment and how to solve the problems in front of class.

5. The teacher gives the assignment to the students to make their own mazes that consist of interesting questions by imitating from the "Lost in time" and present their assignments next time.
Follow up: The students can make understanding and answer the questions about the maze. In addition, they can know about the tourist attractions in the world that appear on the reading maze. Moreover, they can make the reading mazes and present it to the class by themselves.
Notes: The teacher may encourage the students to make their own mazes that it may be about the tourist attraction that they have ever been.

Yes, I think this program can be practiced other skills for the students. For example:
· Writing: The students can practice by write the conversation like in this program by themselves. So, they can practice their grammar skill while they are writing too.
· Speaking: The students can practice their speaking skills by using this passage. They can make the conversation with their friends follow this program.

3. Can you use any of these activities with your learners? Why or why not?
Yes, I can use these activities with my learners because these activities can motivate them to learn and do these. So, these activities are about holidays, tourist information, how to make a decision, places and the relationship with other people.

4. What kinds of problems are likely to occur if you use the activities with your learners?
I think that if I use the activities with my learners, the problems will occur. These problems are about the vocabularies that the students don’t understand and they can’t do these activities. Moreover, they will bore and don’t like to do activities.



5. What can you do to solve the problem?
I think I will teach them about the new and difficult vocabularies that they don’t know before they read each passage.
